DHS Complex Administration means that the processing of the application for an authority to prescribe the item has a high degree of complexity. These applications are handled by a specialised team within DHS. Currently this team is located in Hobart, Tasmania.

All pharmaceutical benefits are identified by a PBS Item Code. The item code is a number followed by a single check character, for example 54321B. The numeric portion of the code is also known as the PBS Number.
A PBS Item Code consists of two parts: a number, the PBS Number and a single check character.
In some circumstances, a PBS Item Code may be padded on the left-hand side with zeroes. This is a Padded PBS Item Code. For example, 05432X. The OID for this coding scheme is 1.2.36.1.2001.1005.22.
Most drugs are available in a ready prepared form. These drugs are prepared in advance and packaged for sale to consumers.

The subsidisation of a drug for a patient is known as a benefit. A benefit may be paid under certain circumstances; these are known as Benefit Types. A PBS Item specifies the conditions for a subsidy; it may be an "unrestricted benefit", a "restricted benefit", a "streamlined authority benefit" or an "authority-required benefit". The benefit type is also known as the restriction level.

The Approved Ex-Manufacturer Price (AEMP) is the amount that the Commonwealth will reimburse for the smallest pack size of a product.
