The PBS XML version 3 data file utilises forward compatibility, which means deployment of a new XML schema version can occur without breaking existing message oriented exchanges.
The versioning used within the PBS XML version 3 data file consists of three numbers to denote a change or update to the standards:
N – used for major changes that are not backward compatible to earlier publications of XML standards
N.n – used for publication updates that are backward compatible within the same major release
N.n.n – used for minor changes: errata, navigation, document updates, new guidelines, etc., that are backward compatible within the same major release.
The schema is forwards-compatible if a consumer that accepts version N.n documents is also able to accept version N.n+1 documents (as well as version N.n+2, N.n+3, etc.).
More information is available on forwards-compatibility.
